Snow White vs Ketty Lester
| I wanted this installation to be a mild assault on the viewer’s senses: the contrast between the smell of flowers and that of decaying flesh; the aesthetic value and relative purpose and function in nature of a flower over that of the severed heart; the multifaceted symbolism of the respective items and their visual and sensory attributes with the concept of romanticism; the feminine voice matched with the image of a male. The video (a male performer lip synching to “Love Letters” by Ketty Lester) was presented along with a freestanding sculpture. The three dimensional piece consisted of a cardboard box, painted black, and tied with a white ribbon. This box contained a severed cow’s heart that was pierced with a nail. Surrounding the heart was an assortment of white roses and lilies. The video played in the background. |
